Owning/Managing Organization: SkillsUSA Inc.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student to excel. SkillsUSA is a national organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations and for further education. SkillsUSA was formerly known as VICA (the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).
Outcomes of Program:
A career and technology based education will help you be more than just an average student. Career and technology education can give you what’s needed to succeed for life: technical skills, academic skills and employability skills. In addition, career and technical education helps you see how what you’re learning applies to the needs of employers.
Regardless of whether you're headed for college or the workforce, SkillsUSA will help you them prepare for the future. In fact, college-bound students can get job experiences to help you define their career plans, identify an appropriate course of study and help pay for tuition.
SkillsUSA activities develop positive attitudes, build self-esteem and empower students to excel. They give students a head start in developing valuable professional skills such as communications, interpersonal abilities, time management, teamwork and more. Because SkillsUSA works hand-in-hand with business and industry, students get the skills employers want.
SkillsUSA competitions begin at the local level and progress to the state and national levels. Students may compete at the state level if they are registered SkillsUSA members enrolled in an approved training program and who meet all contest requirements. Students must be state first-place winners and approved by their state association director to compete at the national level.
National Competitions are in June, but students prepare and compete at local and regional levels throughout the year
All SkillsUSA members, including professional members, must pay membership dues. Membership dues vary by state. Other costs for materials/equipment vary by competition.
In Tennessee: $14 for Students, $28 for Professionals
