The West TN Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in partnership with the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University ASCE student chapters, the Herff College of Engineering, and the West TN STEM Hub is once again organizing a Canstruction® competition to take place April 7, 2017 at the University of Memphis. Canstruction® is a unique competition that showcases the excitement of the civil engineering field to high school students while helping feed hungry people. The students are responsible for the design and construction of giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the competition, all of the food used in the structures is donated to the Mid-South Food Bank for distributionto pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
Each middle or high school team is paired with a professional civil engineer and a civil engineering or STEM student to act as mentors. These mentors are typically ASCE members. The teams can call on their mentors for help with their design ideas.

The Canstruction Junior Event is our newest Youth Program offering! Canstruction provides tutorials to any interested youth group leader to help host a Canstruction Junior Event in your local community.The cost to open or renew an account is $250.
The West TN ASCE Branch solicits sponsorships from local engineering firms to provide the initial cash donation for the purchase of cans used in the designs. Once the teams submit a design proposal, the funds are distributed. Teams can hold canned food drives to raise money as well.
Middle and high school teams.
You can sign up as a class, a school, a religious group, a youth/social group, a community initiative or even a local venue (museum/mall/library) to name a few. To qualify for a Junior Event your group must have youth participants ages 5-18 years old.
Winning teams receive official Canstruction Jr trophies.
One per team per competition.
Outcome of the Activity:
Students will learn about structural design principals while at the same time employing creativity and innovation in developing a structure (and its visual design) using only canned foods.
