2016 PaperPower Memphis

Program Description:

Join USGBC Tennessee for the fourth annual Paper Power design competition, which challenges Memphis-area high school students to think outside of the box and create new structures made from recycled paper products. The competition, a part of the 2016 Green Apple Day of Service, will take place Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis.

Outcomes of Program:

Paper Power is intended to help foster teamwork and innovation; raise awareness about paper, how its recycled and the amount of waste produced; and teach students about design, architecture and construction techniques. All competition proceeds will go toward recycling education in Memphis.

Time Details: 

Aug. 10: Registration Opens
Aug. 17: Team meeting and information session; 5:30 p.m. at Central Library
Sept. 9: Registration Deadline & structure ideas due digitally
Sept. 23: Preview Party & T-shirt pick up!
Sept. 24: Green Apple Day of Service: Paper Power!
10 a.m. - 3 p.m: Construction
3-4 p.m: Judging & Green Trivia
4-5 p.m: Awards Ceremony
Sept. 24 - Oct. 8: Public Viewing
October 8: Recycle Day

People Details: 

For teams, there can be between 2 and 7 high school age students per team, with 1-2 adult/professional sponsors. Team members do not have to be from the same high school.

Prize Details: 

All structures will be judged by a panel of community and design professionals. Prizes and trophies will be presented to the winner of each category. The trophies will be designed and hand-crafted out of local reclaimed materials solely for this competition.

Submission Details: 

One submission per team. If the team has students from different schools, then one submission per school in each group. (When submitting activity, students should tell which schools were in their team if applicable).
